  • Well, sure. But none of them would be enough pressure to change the US direction. Also, China already basically used all of them.

Rare earth being the most famous one. But much like sanctions on Russia this will always be leaky.

Trade with nations on USA’s hit list. Russia being the best example. But China already does trade with them. They’d have to start to break EU and UN sanctions to do more, and while upsetting USA would be nice, they don’t want to create a tear with Europe.

Stopping Chinese students from going to the US. This would be a longer play, but forcing a reverse brain drain would benefit China to US detriment. However, Trump is already doing this for free.

Creating actual alliances, if this were to happen it would put USA on the back foot as they’d have many nations they would suddenly have to contend with. However, this goes against China’s very ethos. China believes alliances are problematic and creates divisions in the world. This is why China has no allies. And to China’s point, look at what Trump just did to his allies.

I could go on. Other options are too weak to make a dent or Trump is already giving it to China for free. It’s hard to make an effective move when your opponent is throwing golden opportunities at you. To be honest, China mostly just wants everything to play out and see where the pieces lay.

  • China absolutely has the power over the US to make the US feel pain. The problem is any use of that power would make China feel just as much pain. It would be self-immolation. The three main things China can do are.

Cut all exports. Ironically, Trump did that to himself so that’s why Trump capitulated.

Sell all US assets. Not just bonds. Of course this would absolutely destroy China’s economy, so a no go.

Nuclear war. But this is the end of humanity, so also a no go.

So China has the power, but would need to basically be willing to end life as we know it, or do what Trump did to himself. Again, ironically that was the one thing that didn’t involve total annihilation and Trump willingly committed seppuku. So weird.

  • China’s not negotiating. This is the best result for China. As long as USA is going to continually be belligerent with tariffs to all nations, China actually would not benefit with preferential treatment.

China wants to let the tariffs slowly but persistently eat away at USA’s economy. 30% is just about right as Mexico and Canada are at 25%. China doesn’t need to be the cheapest, just affordable enough that Americans will still buy. So while trade will decrease it won’t stop. This gives China the breathing room they need to build up supply chains everywhere else. All the while Americans will afford less and less as tariffs eat away at their income. This will lead to less business creation activity and destroy manufacturing as the manufacturing inputs being tariffed makes USA products unaffordable.

If this looks like China is capitulating, all the better. Though most people realize it’s Trump that blinked. Since their counter actions aren’t really tariffs to begin with. China can order their companies who they buy from and more importantly who they don’t.

  • I mean I hate to say this, but the world looks like it might turn in a horrifying way that would make your argument completely null. All Trump has to do is say I got a great deal with China, we’re going to let them take Taiwan and sell Russian weapons. They’ve agreed to buy our bonds with the Russian war payments to fund our economy, best deal ever.

Now suddenly it’s completely and utterly hopeless. Just a few months ago I would have assumed this to be impossible. But today…

  • Your right. It could be both. I mean, my wife said to me the other day that she heard Trump was doing the tariffs to lower the bond interest rates. I said while in some types of recessions that’s true, that wouldn’t work in this case and you’d have to be an idiot to think it would. Sure enough the next day Trump puts a stay on tariffs to most of the world because the bond market got rocked. All I could think of is omg, are they really that fucking stupid?

I wish it was that. No, this is actual evil, not incompetence. Trump has turned the US economy into the largest pump and dump scheme ever. Worse, he’s bragging about how his friends made billions. I can’t even believe this is happening. I’m in utter shock. I knew Trump would be bad, but straight up flaunting corruption like it’s a joke and even bringing the SCOTUS on board with this. I’m just gob smacked.

You don’t understand. Chinese companies have been preparing for this for almost a decade now thanks to US policies. Here’s manufacturing locations just for Moto.

How much is it really made in Brazil? Enough to by pass the tariffs.

This is transhipment. China has been building an enormous transhipment network with those countries heavily dependent on Chinese heavy machinery and services. They expected this, they prepared for this. It’s the US companies that tried to obey their own countries rules that are susceptible. Even Samsung has been working with China to create these networks. Soon, I would estimate, Apple will as well. The problem is, if you thought Tik Tok was a national security issue, forcing every US company to use Chinese logistics to fight your own countries tariffs…

  • I mean China has stated over and over and responded over and over in a way that states China would not willingly become a dominant force. China’s whole thing is they only care about their country and their people and what ever happens in the world it’s not their business.

But here’s some historical examples for what I’m talking about.

    1. Ukraine Russian war. Yes, China sells drone parts and machinery to Russia. That’s constantly talked about as if this is absolute proof that China is supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine. However, Ukraine is just as dependent on these parts and machinery as Russia is. So by that logic, China is supporting Ukraine in the war.

    2. Myanmar. Is currently in a massive civil war. Myanmar is completely under China’s sphere of influence to the point where no external actor is willing to interfere. Yet China is willing to just let the people do whatever they feel is right. Even though it’s literally causing a genocide in the nation.

    3. Sudan. Basically the same as Myanmar. Though an interesting side story to this is Sudan had Chinese tanks that South Sudan did not. Those tanks absolutely crushed the T-72 tanks that South Sudan has. Though that kind of went sideways because South Sudan simply avoided the tanks and attacked in other areas. But if anyone is wondering, yes China’s military equipment far out paces Russia.

    4. Vietnam. After the Sino-Vietnam war, China controlled about 20% of Vietnam. They declared victory and then told the Vietnam government that they respect their sovereignty and just simply left. It was the last war that China ever committed itself to.

Ultimately, China’s whole rise to power is one of completely unwillingness to get involved in anything. It’s one of the reasons no one respects China as a super power. However, with USA doing what it’s doing, it by default goes to China. I don’t know what it means ultimately, but at least for the near future, China is going to allow insane genocide in so much of the world. Something that USA would have gone to war over. They won’t be dominant, but are you sure that’s what you want?

  • You know, I’m confused what people are disagreeing with. I’ve only stated facts.

Sudan and Myanmar are completely under China’s sphere of influence. They are both in the middle of a civil war. China has done nothing and supplied both sides.

Taiwan has consistently stated they want the status quo. Congress is heavily in favor of that. So much so they made a law to handcuff the president from declaring.

China has repeatedly stated they believe Taiwan will aquiesce peacefully and will only invade if Taiwan unilaterally declares independence.

Thus, in a situation where China is the sole hegemony, China knows they are right about Taiwan and will simply wait out Taiwan. If the world is under Chinese sphere of influence we’ll see a massive uptick in civil wars.
