  • No.

I live in Denmark but used to live in the US. I see a LOT of the Danish flag around (Dannebrog 🇩🇰) but it’s a lot less nationalistic. The level of “I love my country” is a bit weird but it’s the “it’s the best country and all others suck and wish they were us” that’s incomprehensible.

I think David Cross said something like this:

If you’re in Europe and someone tells you how your country sucks and isn’t free, you know they’re American

  • We live in not-our-native-language country, and I try to fail at using the local language multiple times per day. If it’s an easy convo and I succeed it doesn’t count for me.

It’s nice, pushes my language use out of its comfort zone. And when I fail I apologize and try to regroup. Definitely has resulted in some miscommunication lol but it’s gotten me far fast.

I’ve seen so many people here who know a LOT and are so scared to use it since it won’t be “right”

  • I agree that immigration is a big part of fixing this.

I think if the population (replacement rate )declines too swiftly, you have a lot of old people and few young people. At some point it become exponentially harder to even keep your last generation’s replacement rate, and you have spiraling population decline. See South Korea for the Speedrun.

If Japan steadily declines to 80M it could be fine. If Japan goes to 80M in a generation, that’s very very bad for the chances of there being any Japanese people left in a few more generations

  • I actually do know. I briefly worked in F1, and I also separately registered my own car with a properly hand built chassis to NY state registration standards.

They are orders of magnitude apart. It’s like saying “both this IKEA glass and the space shuttle took quite a bit of engineering”. Trust me, more hours were put into any mundane F1 part than almost any other vehicle out there

  • I have a hard time imagining making an argument where alcohol and cigarettes are legal and weed is not. In terms of harm it does to people acutely and over time. I understand the position of “nothing like that should be legal” and “everything should be legal” even though I disagree. But I think if you choose one, weed might be the least problematic?

No, it’s not easy to test for driving. But alcohol is and TONS of drunk driving incidents happen still. I think that’s more a function of not having non-driving options to socialize over alcohol.
